Proton Mail Helped FBI Unmask Anonymous 'Protester'

Proton?s security and privacy policies can?t always keep your payment information hidden

Quote:
404 Media says court records show how Proton Mail responded to a request from authorities in Switzerland, where it?s based, for payment info tied to an account associated with the Stop Cop City protests in Atlanta, GA. That information was then given to the FBI.

Well, a Swiss provider responded to a request from authorities in Switzerland. What did you expect?

They volunteered information (it doesn't mention a warrant) on a case like that? I bet Trump will send them a pair of his boots in appreciation. Actually I'd like more information. Was anyone injured or was there property damage if so they may be justified.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Cop_City. It's Switzerland, we shouldn't be surprised that they have conservative views.

Proton Mail responded to a request. Whether the "request" was or wasn't actually a warrant, we simply don't know.

Proton complied with a Swiss Court.

You're not going to be able to remain anonymous to state-level security services without taking extraordinary precautions, meaning no use of the Internet, phones, etc. And even then it is only a matter of time before they find you. They found Osama bin Laden. Now I am reading that AI can unmask anonymous social media posters for a small fee: https://futurism.com/artificial-inte...ymous-accounts

The only reason state-level security services would collect data on you is to allow them to safely ignore your communications. For them your communications is a nuisance, because they have to sift through yours and everyone else's in order to find anything related to the Osama Bin Ladens of this world. We, the masses, cost them a fortune in wasted resources.

If you want to use email and remain anonymous to law enforcement agencies you should use services that accept anonymous forms of payment (cash, crypto-currency) or run your own email server.

Your server still needs connectivity - I should think it'd be hard to get that without being traceable; even with IP over avian carriers the local bird fanciers will know who you are & where your loft is.

I guess what I take away from this is, what do I expect? That Proton Mail would risk bankruptcy by challenging the government in court? We should have expected this.

I don't believe they risk bankruptcy by going to court. They just do what decent citizens do: comply with legal requests from law enforcement. I'm sure they have legal advisors and their legal advisors said there's no point in going to court and losing.
