The World Cup
So, who's going to win the World Cup? (Not Australia...
)I hope you all enjoy the opening ceromony and opening game--me, I've got theatre tickets booked from months ago, so I'm going to miss it! ![]() |

I'm torn... it would be nice if England won, but at the same time it would be more exciting if Japan pulled off the upset of the millennium and somehow took the trophy (given that I'm living here right now!)

Are you going to some games, Edwin?
I don't think we're likely to see England or Japan get too far, I'm afraid (although expect to see Japan pull off a few upsets...) I'd say France is the most likely contender. |

I like USA very much.
The only exception occurs every 4 years. World Cup is almost not covered on major channels. Only 2 games are shown on ABC, and not even live! I am jealous since everyone on the globe, except us, can watch almost all games live. |

I'm saying either Portugal or Argentina's going to win. Can't hardly wait.

2 games!
Even in Australia, where Aussie Rules is king, we get every game on free-to-air! |

Ditch the theatre tix Jeremy!
I just came back from NYC...I must admit I was surprised to find guys (not gals!) playing football in Central Park! And I saw the friendly between Brazil and Malaysia on TV there...even saw the score in Times Square! I'll be rooting for Argentina... ![]() Last edited by Tango : 31 May 2002 at 03:57 PM. |

I think I will not see very many matches, because The Netherlands are not present!
But for now I think France will have a fair chance of winning. |

i wouldn't mind watching, but sadly, my local tv content providers are showing the semi-finals and the finals on tv, that's all...
how exciting can that be, watching the whole world cup in 2 matches? the cable company here provides live coverage of all matches of course, but i am not subscribed to it. on a side-note: i think it's wonderfully neat that we have this off-topic lounge. |

I had the privilege of seeing Cameroon play Brazil in a quarter final of the 2000 Olympics football tournament. So I have a soft spot for Cameroon although you can't say they are underdogs any more, being the Gold Medallists then and now I understand African champions.
Soccer is not my favourite sport but I am still looking forward very much to seeing some high class football over the next month. And while I'm here thank you very much Edwin for providing this "lounge". Regards, Jeff Kogler |

Italy.
The French are getting nervous and their defence isn't what it was. The Argentinians are burdened by expectation, and all that fuss about the No.10 shirt. The Brazilians aren't what they used to be. The Spanish aren't a tournament team. The English will go out gallantly, but they'll go out. And Italy will sneak in unnoticed. You heard it here first Max |

As for England, well, fingers crossed they will make it out of the group, and then get past France, after that who knows.... Andy Last edited by norbs : 31 May 2002 at 07:38 PM. |

Well, three thumbs down for NHK (Japan's national channel) and their coverage of the opening ceremony
They have so far been showing, without exaggeration, less than 25% of the actual ceremony, with most of the program occupied by studio interviews, graphics representing the different team combinations, a documentary on the Yokohama stadium where the final will be held, etc!!! Why they can't just shut up and broadcast the OPENING CEREMONY is beyond me. Grrrr! |

Senegal scored the first one !
Excellent coverage down here in Malaysia! 5 extra channels covering 2 views for both teams playing, tactical reviews, a blimp view and an SMS-TV chat session. All matches and opening/closing ceremonies broadcasted live on both free and paid TV ! |
