A BBC transmission of a concert recorded on 01 March 2026 in the local concert hall. It's Mahler's Symphony no 2 - the "Resurrection". -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._2_(Mahler)
In this concert the orchestra is a BBC one & the chorus (who only sing in the last 15 minutes or so) is one I used to sing in; I've sung in performances of this work several times - so it's a nostalgic listen. Just before the chorus start to sing the (huge) orchestra gets quieter & quieter. The chorus who've been sitting down for more than hour by then start to sing very quietly & slowly grow in volume ... before the orchestra start playing again. It's always tense ... because if the chorus aren't in tune when the orchestra join in ... it shows. Even though the chorus will have done a warm-up before the public were let into the auditorium ... that was likely 90+ mins ago. In the gap you've been fried under stage lights unable to fidget because you're in the public eye right behind the orchestra... You can't cough or clear your throat - too loud (or drink some water - too visible) all of which would be ok in a rehearsal. |

Manic Street Preachers - "The Masses Against The Classes"
Interesting fact: this was the first new number one in the UK charts in the new millennium. Not bad for a limited edition single that was not promoted heavily and never had an official video shot for it. It has also never been included on any Manics album, other than their "best of" compilations. I love the double interpretation of the lyrics. On one hand there is the literary interpretation, "the masses against the classes", which is vintage Manic Street Preachers (think of their massive hit "A Design For Life"). On the other hand, in this one, it can be interpretated as if the Manics themselves are for once the classes while the masses refer to the fans from the early albums who were complaining that the band became too mainstream after the disappearance of band member Richey Edwards. The neat thing is that, regardless what interpretation you follow, the lyrics still make sense. "I'm tired of giving a reason, when we're the only thing left to believe in". The song opens with a Noam Chomsky quote and ends with an Albert Camus quote, also vintage Manics who are known for including quotes in their songs as well as in the artwork for their releases. |

My penguins quietly grumbling amongst themselves about the fact that 'their tea' hasn't yet magically appeared in front of their beaks.
(This is because someone(*) accidentally gave them rather more lunch -- or strictly - more time to eat as much fish as they could around 'lunchtime' -- than was normal - so the onset of what will be a shorter than normal tea-time is delayed.) * - Who do you think that was? |

Hearing aids not in. The fan next to me, ringing in my ears. a dog barking across the river. A rooster crowing next door.

Manic Street Preachers - Little Baby Nothing
A duet with... Traci Lords. Because this is a family-friendly forum, I won't say anything about her, those interested just have to do their research. The song deals with how women stand strong in a male-dominated world, and some even use men for their own strength and empowerment. Hence they looked for a woman to do the chorus vocals who really suited the lyrics. The song also reveals some lines that are vintage Manic Street Preachers ("All they leave behind is money, paper made of broken twisted trees") as well as the lines "Culture, boredom, alienation and despair!" which was a line that many fans literally bear as it was printed on many fan shirts. Great track! |
