Do any ISPs (at least in the 'West') support plain old dial-up & acoustic modems?
[Modern modems do of course exist, but not with old-style connectors.] Last edited by JeremyNicoll : 30 Nov 2025 at 09:52 PM. Reason: Oops, too many Cs in 'acoustic'... |

Other than a possible difference in speed, would it make a difference whether the modem is internal or external?

A quick google pointed-out to me that a bigger problem here in the UK might be that analogue phone lines have vanished. My home phone is plugged into a special port on the back of my (notionally cable-tv - except I have no TV subscriptions) cable router. It's been years since I last used a (tiny USB-attached) dial-up modem, but it was useful for contingency if cable-tv broadband was broken, back when I still had an analogue (voice) phone line. I didn't pay monthly for a dial-up account somewhere but instead just used a pay-by-the-minute public ISP (for which one had to register but that was all, IIRC). Nowadays I suppose I'd use my mobile phone as a 4G modem (it can do 5G but 5G connectivity is pricier). Hmm, this could be off-topic. I'd better be careful. Aha! I know: Is it? |

I might have suspected it. In fact, did I not say just that?

Who are you asking when you are asking who are you asking?
Does this seem repetitive? |
