Volt - Niki Lauda's Girl

Belgian band who were quite unsuccesful. Some years later, the lead vocalist launched a very succesful solo career under the moniker Daan. He is now a famous and celebrated artist here in Belgium. But few people remember he was in Volt before going solo.

The odd thing is that this song, released when I was only 10 or 11 years old, stuck with me despite the song and band being forgotten by most people. Odd how we remember some songs from childhood, even those that most people have long forgotten about.

Patricia Kaas - Il me dit que je suis belle

Great song. Her voice is beautiful, and the lyrics are great too (note the double meaning of some lines).

Patricia Kaas, despite singing almost solely in French, managed to break the language barrier and had chart successes in countries such as the UK, Germany, the Benelux, Czech Republic, Russia, Japan, Romania, ... That is a very rare fact for French-language music (or for any music not in English in fact).

Rammstein - "Reise reise"

German metal band Rammstein is one of those few other acts that, despite not singing in English, achieve global success. They sing in German only, but broke the language barrier quite easily, touring the entire world and having a global fan base.

This song deals with warfare at sea, and how the waves cry for all the violence. I assume this is a statement against violence from a naval perspective.

Note: "Reise reise" would literally translate as "Travel travel". It is the commanding version of the verb "reisen", which is translated as "to travel".
However, the title of this song refers to an older version of German. In a distant past it meant something like "arise, arise" and was used amongst seamen. Hence Rammstein used this title, even though in modern German language the translation would be "to travel" instead of "to arise".

Listening to radio program of Danny Robas on local Galatz FM station.
He plays nice international and local popular music, always starting the program with a Beatles song.

Current song he is playing is The Road / Jackson Browne.

When I was a child his family lived about 100 meters south of us on the other side of our street. I don't remember him, but I do remember playing with his younger brother when I was about 7 years old. When my brother was working as a recording engineers he recorded some of Danny's songs.

Yuval Raphael - New Day Will Rise (Israeli entry of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025)

The song was sadly enough a bit tainted by political actions that the singer was not involved with and couldn't help herself. If you ignore that, this song is just musically nice and her vocals are very good. I'm not too wild about the French part, but the Hebrew part is beautiful (you can find the translation online).

She ended up as runner-up in the contest, second only to the Austrian winner who was otherworldly beautiful. But this Israeli song certain was amongst the better entries too.

Note that the name Yuval means "stream", and according to the legend it was also the name of the first musician known on earth.

The Hebrew part:

Mayim rabim
Lo yechabbu
Et ha'ahava
V'neharot lo yishtefu

מים רבים
לא יכבו
את האהבה
ונהרות לא ישטפוה

Translation:

"Many waters cannot quench love
Neither can the floods drown it"
