What is the function of the Buddy List in the User Control Panel?

It appears that when you add someone to your Buddy List they do not get any notification, nor are you added to their Buddy List.

I've never seen the point of a buddy list, but the ignore list - now that is useful.

One or two of the very common email services from the long long ago times included a Buddy List. The feature seemed to let the account holders send and receive very immediate messages like as a Chat system. I do not believe this kind of feature is part of email these days.

Interesting. I have seen some old accounts that have entries for ICQ, and possibly MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo!, or Skype.
