Perhaps the choice is between
Lincoln Logs and the metal rods in
Meccano.
In this case I would prefer Meccano, but mainly because I never had Lincoln Logs and haven't heard of them until my son was in nursery school in the United States, and on the other hand as a child I had an Erector set (American Meccano compatible version) with an electric motor, and my father also had a real Meccano steam engine from the Meccano set he had as a child.
Talking about construction sets, my favorite as a young child was
Tinkertoy, and later it was
Lego.
