Yandex stock plummets

If you use Yandex or other Russian email services you might want to consider an alternate backup plan, if for no other reason than they are all going to be struggling economically now that the sanctions are starting to hit and the ruble is crashing. The head of mail.ru has been personally sanctioned too. Yandex stock: https://markets.businessinsider.com/...n-putin-2022-2

There are numerous posts here praising Yandex email services. Maybe the admirers will learn their lesson. Or may be not ....:p

Trading in Yandex was halted yesterday on Nasdaq after the stock crashed. They may get delisted. https://www.barrons.com/articles/yan...ia-51646057103

Using Yandex for years...its very good imho. I dont see how a war (which yandex has nothing to do with) can be stopped by not using an email service from Russia. Besides Yandex also has servers outside Russia.(as in Finland) They also have a HQ in the Netherlands at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

Mail.ru is another story....they are inclusively Russian and also totaly based in Russia.

I would be worried that they won't be able to continue operations due to economic collapse.

I don't use Mail.ru but, if I did, I would continue to do so.

The only recent article: Yandex bond woes are first step to state takeover

EricG 9 Mar 2022 04:11 PM

I found no evidence of servers outside of RU. You can`t create accounts on yandex.eu, only yandex.com. Probably EU restriction.

Interesting hack attempt by Five Eyes.

I just typed in " yandex.eu"....got a webpage where you can make an Yandex ID (comes with email account).

https://passport.yandex.eu/registrat...5-0ad7bb73b203

I dont know if it matters...i am based in the EU (Netherlands) and did not use a VPN.

might add this what i found on Quora and on the net doing a search fwiw:

https://www.quora.com/Where-are-Yandex-servers-located

https://www.datacenter-forum.com/dat...newable-energy

The last article was from July 2021...so i guess thats still valid. So yes Yandex has a data center in Finland.

D

EricG 12 Mar 2022 04:05 PM

Ok, I can get to registration on yandex.eu from the Log In pop up.

I don't find quora reliable. The data-center article is good. I guess Russia is not doing renewable besides hydro.

Since Yandex is incorporated in Netherlands (probably for legal reasons), why didn't the company just move there or to Finland when the war started? Let Putin have the Russian business and Cozy Bear can run it.

More trouble for Yandex. Value has dropped from around $31 billion to about $7 billion. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...eeds-in-a-year

chrisretusn 2 Apr 2022 06:31 PM

Well don't have stock on Yandex so not to much worried about this. I do have Yandex search as an option in Firefox.

I read that Firefox removed the option to use the Yandex search engine. https://www.pcmag.com/news/mozilla-r...s-from-firefox

They removed their provided search options for Yandex and Mail.ru.

At any rate, when I upgraded to the non-bug, virtue signal fix Firefox 98.0.1 Yandex was still there, it was not removed. I am guessing because it was selected as one of my alternate search engines. It is also possible I added it manually awhile back; which is what I would have done if they had removed it.

I can still use Yandex (and mail.ru) extentions in Firefox. So I realy dont know whats the problem here. Yandex certainly is a very good search engine (and mailprovider).

Anyway...I am still using it. If you want i can put screenshots in here to proof it...but actualy I dont care.

How about that? I did not know they both had extensions. They are still listed in the Firefox Browser Add-ons site. Basic proof as I said earlier this is a PR move to virtue signal with the rest anti Russia crowd. that and it did not remove Yandex from my search.

I am using Yandex as my default search engine. It was Brave but search result are limited. I agree that Yandex is a very good search engine.

Well, the Release Notes from Firefox for version 98.0.1 say this:
Quote:

Yandex and Mail.ru have been removed as optional search providers in the drop-down search menu in Firefox. If you previously installed a customized version of Firefox with Yandex or Mail.ru, offered through partner distribution channels, this release removes those customizations, including add-ons and default bookmarks. Where applicable, your browser will revert back to default settings, as offered by Mozilla. All other releases of Firefox remain unaffected by the change.

That may be what the release states; however, that is not what I observed. My Yandex search was not removed.

Sorry to have bump this up.

I'm recently interested in using Yandex Disk as my Google Photos replacement (as Yandex provides unlimited photos and videos upload from phone). However I'm kind of skeptical because of the tension around the world versus Russia, the origin of Yandex.

As a matter of fact I'm not located in the US so can I say I'm relatively "safe" to use Yandex Disk after all? I plan to use solely for media upload and not their email although I had registered for one long long time ago which is still valid today (surprise surprise). I really hope the war had not started and I wouldn't have any worries to use Yandex like I'm now.

My question to the floor: is anyone still keeping their Yandex account and actively using it? What's your opinion on this?

beeboy 24 Mar 2024 03:47 AM

I closed my yandex account a few weeks ago. Wasn't using it much and I wasn't comfortable with it any longer. I had no complaints.

Are you staying in the US?

TenFour 24 Mar 2024 06:54 PM

Personally, from here in the USA, I wouldn't touch Yandex. Certainly not for anything critical. I only use the biggest, most stable, and most trusted providers for photo backup.

chrisretusn 24 Mar 2024 10:00 PM

I use it, no worries.

Cool. I guess it's not blocked unlike in the US (I could be wrong). Or Yandex in general is not blocked anywhere in the world (yet)?

Glad to know! Are you using the mail only or both mail and disk? Is using mail even a good idea given that the mails sent would possibly be rejected by any other providers out there that place Yandex in their blacklist?
In other words, did you ever encounter your email being rejected?
THanks for your valuble input!
